Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpa)

The bur oak is a mighty, slow-growing oak species native to North America, known for its impressive size, longevity, and hardiness. It can reach heights of 70 to 90 feet, with a broad, rounded crown and thick, deeply ridged bark that helps protect it from fire and harsh conditions. Its leaves are large and lobed, often with a distinctive hourglass shape, turning yellow or brown in the fall. The bur oak’s namesake is its oversized acorn, cradled in a fringed, mossy cup that nearly encloses the nut—one of the largest acorns among all North American oaks. This tree is highly adaptable, thriving in dry uplands, prairie edges, and savannas, as well as in heavier soils. Bur oaks are ecological keystones, providing food and habitat for a wide range of wildlife. Their deep taproots and strong wood make them symbols of strength and resilience on the American landscape.
