Swamp White Oak (Quercus bicolor)
The swamp white oak is a hardy, long-lived deciduous tree native to lowland areas of the eastern and central United States. Typically reaching heights of 50 to 70 feet, it has a broad, rounded crown and a strong, sturdy trunk. True to its name, it thrives in moist soils, bottomlands, and along streambanks, making it well-suited for flood-prone or poorly drained areas. Its leaves are broad, with shallow lobes and a distinctive two-toned appearance—dark green on top and silvery-white underneath—creating a shimmering effect in the breeze. In fall, the foliage turns shades of yellow, bronze, or russet. The bark is gray and flaky, often peeling in ragged scales on mature trees. Swamp white oaks produce rounded acorns in pairs on long stalks, which serve as valuable food for wildlife. Tolerant of urban conditions and soil variability, this oak is favored for both restoration work and ornamental planting. With its adaptability, attractive foliage, and ecological importance, the swamp white oak is a quiet powerhouse in both natural and designed landscapes.
